Why Bet on MMA?
Simply put, MMA is now one of the most popular and lucrative sports to bet on. It is a sport where the underdog always has a shot at winning (ie: Matt Serra vs GSP). But how exactly do you bet on MMA? It is fairly simple, and with online sportsbooks like Bodog and BetUS, placing a wager is a breeze.
You must first understand money lines..
Mixed martial arts and boxing use a form of betting called a money line. In this form of betting, you are wagering only on who wins the fight. That’s it.
The odds for an MMA fight are always written the same way. For example:
A) Randy Couture:+250
B) Chuck Liddell: -350
or
A) Matt Serra +700
B) Georges St. Pierre -1000
The positive number represents the underdog (expected loser).
The negative number represents the favourite (expected winner).
Before we continue, we should mention 2 important points:
1. When betting on the underdog, the amount you win will always be greater than your original bet amount. This is to even out the betting and make it more appealing to bet on the expected loser.
2. When betting on the favourite, the amount you win will always be less than your original bet amount. This is to prevent everyone from betting on the favourite and becoming a millionaire.
Now back to our first example..
A) If you bet on the the underdog Randy Couture (+250), you would win $250 for every $100 wager, or $25 for every $10 wager.
So, If you had bet $100, you would cash out with $350 (original $100 bet + $250 winnings). You earn more betting on the underdog.
B) However, if you had bet on the favourite Chuck Liddell (-350), you would have to bet $350 just to win $100, or $35 to win $10.
So if you had bet $350 on Chuck, you would cash out with $450 (original $350 bet + $100 winnings). You earn less betting on the favourite.
As you can see, you will always win more money betting on the underdog, but the risks are higher.
Now back to our second example..
B) If you had bet on the GSP(-1000), you would have to bet $1000 just to win $100.
A) If you had bet on Matt Serra (+700), a $100 wager would win you $700! We all know that Matt Serra won that fight and those who bet on him are probably still smiling about it!
